Hearing Held for Man Accused of Kwik Fill Robbery

CLEARFIELD – A Clearfield man accused of attempting to rob Kwik Fill had a hearing on Wednesday.

Michael James Waugh, 31, of Clearfield faced charges of robbery (3), harassment (2) and disorderly conduct (2). He’s currently incarcerated at the Clearfield County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Gary Anderson, a trainee at the time of the incident, testified that he and his trainer were closing up for the night on Oct. 5, 2010. He said they made their cash drop and were running off the nightly report. When they were done, he said the report fell off the counter. His indicated that his trainer went outside to retrieve the report, and in doing so, unlocked the door.

Anderson said Waugh, whom he did not know but said he recognized from the incident, came up behind him and put a butcher knife to his throat. Anderson testified that he also saw Waugh at the gas station that day on two other occassions, possibly scoping the place.

Anderson said Waugh told him it was a robbery. Anderson said he told him they didn’t have any money. He said Waugh then ordered him to open the safe, or he was going to kill him.

At this point in the hearing, Waugh mumbled, “This is bull*&^%.”

Anderson said he told Waugh he couldn’t open the safe. He said Waugh put the knife down, walked outside, then “hauled ass.”

After hearing the testimony, Magisterial District Judge James Hawkins moved all charges, save one count of robbery, to the next term of court. The one count of robbery is based on items that are taken; in this case, no items were taken.
