Mother Accused of Killing Infant Child

HUNTINGDON – WJACTV.com is reporting that state police arrested a woman Wednesday morning following a 17-month investigation into her newborn son’s death.

Court documents said 23-year-old Maria Coleen Boyd is charged with criminal homicide and first-degree murder.

Authorities said she called 911 after she found her son, 6-week-old Andrew Boyd, unresponsive in a bassinet at their Smithfield Township, Huntingdon County, home in July 2010.  Results from an autopsy said the infant died from blunt-force trauma and that he had alcohol in his system.

Boyd hid her face with a hood and remained silent as she was brought to the Huntingdon County Courthouse for a bail hearing, which was denied. She was then brought to a magistrate’s office in nearby Alexandria to be arraigned.

Huntington County District Attorney George Zanic said, “It’s a heartbreaking case.”

Boyd’s defense attorney and Boyd’s mother both defended her innocence.
