John W. Sawtelle, 87, of Clearfield died Friday at Mountain Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Clearfield. He was born on Jan. 26, 1924 in Philipsburg, a son of the late Fred and Jane (Scaife) Sawtelle.
Mr. Sawtelle was employed by the PA State Employment Office for 35 years, retiring as the manager. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Clearfield and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He is survived by three children, John Sawtelle Jr. and his wife, Peggy and Jane Gorman and her husband, Richard, all of Clearfield and Ron Sawtelle and his wife, Judy of Olanta; seven grandchildren, John Sawtelle III, Jacqueline Grombach, Mary Beth Gorman, Amy Gorman, Scott Sawtelle, Bethany Keil and Karen Barrett; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Eleanor Hamilton of Olympia, WA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Madeline V. (McGonigal) Sawtelle on Sept. 21, 2009 and whom he married March 14, 1947 in Philipsburg; a sister Wilma Hubler and two brothers Roy and Glenn Sawtelle.
Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield with Pastor Sallie Swenson officiating. Interment will follow in the Philipsburg Cemetery, Philipsburg.
Military honors will be accorded at the funeral home by the Clearfield American Legion and VFW Posts’ Honor Guards.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Christ United Methodist Church, 705 Dorey St., Clearfield.
