PLCB “Goes Orange” in Support of Hunger Awareness

HARRISBURG – Committed to giving back to local communities, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board has worked to stamp out hunger by “Going Orange” in support of hunger awareness.

In recognition of this important cause, PLCB employees recently showed their support by wearing orange, the national color of hunger awareness.

“Far too many families are still struggling to make ends meet, wondering how they’re going to provide for the basic needs of their families tonight when it’s time to eat dinner,” Liquor Control Board Chairman Joseph E. Brion said. “The PLCB remains committed to giving back to local communities to help provide for those families in any way that we can.”

Working alongside volunteers from Capital Wine & Spirits LLC and the Harrisburg Senators, the PLCB participated in an annual food drive, donating hundreds of pounds of food to the Central Pa Food Bank, to be distributed to families across the mid-state.  As part of the annual event, Capital Wine & Spirits again made a $10,000 donation to the food bank on behalf of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board and Capital’s employees.

“We are fortunate to be able to make an impact on our community in such a positive way,” said Capital Wine & Spirits President Mark Littles.  “It is an honor to be able to work closely with our partners at the PLCB.  It is important to me, as well as to our associates that we are able to give back and help those in need.  By our actions, we hope that we can encourage other companies, regardless of size, to support our communities as well.”

In Pennsylvania, approximately 40,000 people receive assistance through the food bank on any given week, with 34 percent of them under the age of 18.  More than 70 percent of the households are “food insecure,” having limited access to nutritional food or uncertain ability to acquire enough food to feed a family.

“As Pennsylvanians we have all felt the impact of the downturn in the economy. Our staff at the Liquor Control Board understands the importance of giving back and have responded to the call for help,” Brion said.  “For the success that we have enjoyed in our agency and our stores over the last year, we couldn’t be more pleased to ‘pay it forward’ by helping others this holiday season.”
