Campus Corner: Clarion Swimmer Krchnak Posts Two More Wins; Oberlin’s Kalgren, Clarion’s Sopic Record Interceptions

CLARION – Junior Mark Krchnak of Clearfield was one of several doublewinners for Clarion in Friday’s 147-94 victory over Shippensburg in the Waldo S. Tippin Natatorium.
 
Krchnak stopped the clock at 2:14.23 in the 200-yard breastroke and teamed with Joseph Ward, Joe Welch and Casey Dunleavy for a 3:36.95 time that was best in the 400 medley.
 
Krchnak also was a doublewinner for the Golden Eagles in their season-opening loss to Grove City.

FOOTBALL
 
GRANTVILLE, Ohio – Junior defensive back David Kalgren of Curwensville made a season-high eight tackles and one pass interception for Oberlin (2-6) in a 37-28 North Coast Athletic Conference road loss to Denison (4-5) in front of 1,375 fans at Piper Stadium Saturday afternoon.
 
Kalgren, who had six solo stops, also returned six kickoffs for 110 yards as the Yeomen slipped to 1-3 in the NCAC.
 
His season totals are 35 tackles, including 31 solo efforts, two interceptions and five passes broken up.
 
Kalgren leads the team in kickoff returns with 22 for a 21.2-yard average as well as punt runbacks with six for an 8.3 average.

CLARION – Redshirt senior safety Shawn Sopic of Curwensville recorded five tackles and his first interception of the season while redshirt junior linebacker Nate Sipes of Curwensville also posted five tackles to go with one pass defended as Clarion (2-7) treated a Family Day crowd of 1,047 to a 28-21 win over Gannon (3-6) at Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon.
 
Sipes and the Golden Eagle defensive front held the Golden Knights to minus-14 yards rushing in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game played in snow and frigid temperatures.
 
Sopic’s pick, one of four by Clarion, thwarted a Gannon drive inside the Clarion 30 with the Golden Eagles leading 14-7 late in the first half.
 
Sipes is the top Clarion tackler with 80 stops, which rank fourth in the PSAC and 58th in NCAA Divison II. His 51 assists are the most in the PSAC and tied for 12th in the nation.
 
He has two tackles for losses, two passes broken up and two fumble recoveries.
 
Sopic is No. 2 for the Golden Eagles with his 49 tackles.
 
He has one tackle for a loss, one pass broken up and one forced fumble.

EDINBORO – Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Jesse Hoover of Curwensville caught three passes for 40 yards while freshman running back Jed Greslick of Grampian rushed twice for three yards and returned three kickoffs for 97 yards, one a career-long 40-yarder, in winless Lock Haven’s 42-7 loss to Edinboro (7-2) in front of 2,175 fans who turned on a chilly, rainy Saturday afternoon at Sox Harrison Stadium.
 
The Bald Eagles slipped to 0-8 with their sixth Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division setback that was their 40th in a row, a new PSAC record.
 
Hoover leads Lock Haven in receptions with 29 and is second in yards with 341. He has scored two touchdowns.
 
Greslick has nine carries for 26 yards and 14 kickoff returns for a 25.5-yard average.

ANNVILLE – Because of wintry conditions at Lebanon Valley’s Arnold Field, junior wide receiver Jarrin Campman of Clearfield was not involved in Lycoming’s ground-oriented offense during a 10-7 win that kept the Warriors locked in third place in the Middle Atlantic Conference at 5-1.
 
Only 250 fans braved near-freezing temperatures in a driving snowstorm that covered the field, and Lycoming (7-1) quarterback Zach Klinger attempted just three passes as the Warriors relied on their defense to reward a rushing attack that netting 217 yards on 69 plays.
 
According to the Lycoming football website, Warrior players cleared off two inches of snow to enable sophomore Zack Czap of Philipsburg to kick a 29-yard field goal on the final play of the first half for a 10-0 lead.
 
Campman is tied for the team lead in receptions with 23 for 307 yards. He has scored two touchdowns and returned one punt for 11 yards.

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Junior running back Isiah Morgan of Clearfield had one carry for three yards in Juniata’s best all-around effort of the season Saturday, but the visiting Eagles (0-8) came up short against McDaniel (2-6) Saturday, losing the Centennial Conference game 23-19 at snow-covered Scott Bair Stadium.
 
Though outgaining an opponent for the first time since 2008, Juniata saw its school-record losing streak extended to 20 in front of a McDaniel Homecoming crowd of 3,757 who sat through snow and temperatures hovering around the freezing mark.
 
Morgan has 21 carries for 47 yards and two pass receptions for 17 yards in seven games.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Junior placekicker Parker Herrington of Clearfield booted five extra points in the first half as Air Force (4-4) mounted a 35-0 lead en route to a 42-0 victory over New Mexico (0-8) Saturday afternoon.
 
The Falcons disappointed a University Stadium crowd of 16,691 in snapping a three-game losing streak with their first win in four Mountain West Conference games.
 
Herrington has recorded 53 points on nine field goals in 10 attempts and 26 extra points to lead Air Force in scoring and rank second among placekickers and fifth overall in the conference.

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Redshirt sophomore lineman Nick Redden of Clearfield saw action at both guard positions on offense and also on punt, extra point and field goal units as Duquesne (7-2) solidified its grip on second place in the Northeast Conference by shutting out host Monmouth (4-4) 16-0 Saturday on a rainy, windy afternoon that limited the turnout at Kessler Field to 1,050 fans.
 
At 5-1, the Dukes are a half-game behind Albany, which is 6-0.

LORETTO – Freshman linebacker Andrew Redden of Clearfield played on the kickoff units for St. Francis (2-7) in Saturday’s 27-13 win over defending Northeast Conference champion and pre-season favorite Central Connecticut State (2-7).
 
Only 522 fans braved the near-whiteout, sub-freezing conditions at snow-covered DeGol Field to watch the Red Flash snap a five-game losing streak with their first conference win, according to the St. Francis football website.
