LOCK HAVEN – October is Hunger Awareness Month. In recognition of that, Lock Haven University’s MountainServe Center for Global Citizenship is coordinating their 4th Annual Hunger Bowl this year.
The service competition runs from Oct. 11 to Nov. 3. University student groups, clubs, classes and teams are challenged to engage in service projects that address the issue of hunger. In the past, students have run canned food drives, volunteered at community lunch programs, or raised funds for hunger and famine relief globally.
The projects will be judged by a panel of student, faculty and community members. The winner, which will be announced at the Sleepout for Hunger event on November 4 in Triangle Park, will be awarded a trophy created by Professor Vance McCoy’s ceramics studio students.
According to Anne-Marie Turnage, director of the MountainServe Center, “The annual Hunger Bowl is a friendly competition for a very worthy cause. It is wonderful to see so many students actively engaged in the fight against hunger.”
For six straight years, Lock Haven University has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.
