Slay tabbed Big Ten Women’s Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Sophomore middle hitter Katie Slay (Raleigh, N.C.) picked up the second weekly honor of the season as this week’s Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. Slay was an integral part of Penn State’s victories against Wisconsin on Sept. 30 and No. 10 Minnesota on Oct. 1.

In Penn State’s 3-0 sweep of Wisconsin, Slay had eight kills in nine swings and had a match-high five total blocks, including two solo stuffs. She followed up that performance with nine kills in 12 attempts against the Gophers. Slay was a wall at the net with a match-best seven total blocks, including two solo. For the weekend, Slay was second on the team with 17 kills on a team-high .714 attack percentage. She also led the Nittany Lions with 12 total blocks. Slay averaged 2.83 kills per set and 2.00 blocks per set.

The Lions defeated Northwestern, 3-2, on Wednesday and host No. 1 Illinois on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 8 p.m. The match will be tape-delayed and will air on Monday, Oct. 10 at 9 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
