Obituary Notice: Herbert Hawkins

Herbert Hawkins, 82, of Glen Hope, passed away at 9:24 a.m., Sept. 28, 2011 at his residence.  He was born on Jan. 2, 1929, in Madera a son of the late Edwin and Edith Mae (Wertz) Hawkins.

Herb served in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman 2nd Class in WW II and was a 1950 graduate of the former Bigler Twp. High School.

He retired as a surveyor for the PA Department of Transportation.  Herb  was a member and past Master of the Osceola Mills Masonic Lodge #515, he also was a member of the  John Branic V.F.W. Post 8822 and the Freeberg American Legion Post 591, Houtzdale.  Herb was Democratic Chairman of the Glen Hope Boro.  He served on and past president  the Glen Hope Boro Council and was past president of Glen Hope Water Company.

On Feb. 9, 1951 in Winchester, VA he married Annie Holobinko Hawkins who survives of Glen Hope. He  is also survived by seven children; Jean Bevevino and her husband Mark of Algonquin, IL; Mary Elizabeth LeGrand and her husband  George of Philipsburg;  Herbert Hawkins, Jr and his wife Tina of Morrisdale; Patricia Jenkins and her husband Jeff of Coalport; James Hawkins and his wife Lisa of Glen Hope; Sally Riegel and her husband William of Glen Hope;  and John Hawkins and his wife Susan of Gibsonia. He is survived by 22 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Herb is survived by a sister and two brothers, Margaret McKeehen and her husband John of Carlisle; Edward Hawkins of Wilmington, NC; and Gerald Hawkins who made his home with Herb and Annie for the past 28 years.  A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Agnes Dotts; and eight brothers, William, Herman, Lee, Harry, Richard, Norman, James and Thomas.

Herb loved hunting, gardening, animals and music .  He extremely loved his wife, his brother, Gerald, children and grandchildren and all the family times.  Herb fought a long battle with heart and kidney disease.

Friends will be received on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and on Saturday, from 9-11 a.m. at the Kruise Funeral Home, Inc Madera.  A Masonic Memorial service will be held on Friday in the funeral home.
 
Funeral Services will be held on Oct. 1 at 11:00 a.m. in the Kruise Funeral Home, Inc, Madera with Rev. Robert Ford officiating. Interment will follow in the Umbria Cemetery, Osceola Mills.
