CCAAA to Offer AARP Driver Safety Coarse

CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Area Agency on Aging, Inc., in partnership with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), is offering area individuals age 50 and older the opportunity to take the AARP Driver Safety Course, as well as the Safety Refresher Course.  The classroom courses were developed by AARP to help drivers remain safe on today’s roads while providing the bonus of a multi-year discount on their car insurance if they complete the course.

The original eight-hour class is being held in two sessions: Nov. 2, and Nov. 9, from 12:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. each day at the Clearfield Center for Active Living located in the Area Agency on Aging building at 103 North Front Street, Clearfield.  Pre-registration is required for the course.

The one-day refresher course for those who have already completed the original class in the past will be offered October 5 from 12:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.  Both courses provide drivers with eligibility for discounts on their car insurance for three years.

The course is designed to meet the specific needs of older drivers and covers age-related physical changes, declining perceptual skills, rules of the road, local driving problems, and license renewal requirements.  RSVP volunteer instructors trained by AARP will conduct the courses that are presented through a combination of video presentations and group discussion.

All automobile insurance companies conducting business in Pennsylvania are required to provide a premium discount to graduates of the DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM who are 55 years of age and older.  Couples who both have a driver’s license are each required to be certified in the program in order to be eligible for the discount.  Although geared to drivers 50 and over, the class is open to all ages and AARP membership is not a requirement.

The cost of the course for non-AARP members is $14 while AARP members pay a discounted price of $12.  Checks are to be made payable to AARP and are to be given to the instructor on the first day of class.  Class size is limited and the required reservations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis, so early sign-up is suggested.
