FRENCHVILLE – State police in Clearfield have reported a scam that left a Frenchville woman short $6,000.
According to police, the scam began in the early part of June. An elderly Frenchville woman received a phone call at her residence from an unknown man. He told her that she won over half a million dollars. In order to receive the money, she wsa told she had to first pay taxes on the “winnings”. Over the following weeks she sent the suspect different sums of money totaling $6,000. She sent the money to Canada through transfer companies such as Western Union and MoneyGram, per the direction of the suspect.
In addition, the out-of-country calls made from the suspect were billed to the elderly woman’s phone bill.
The investigation is ongoing.
