Pennsylvania DEP Fines Reading Dentist $13,250 for Failure to Renew X-Ray Registration

HARRISBURG – The Department of Environmental Protection announced  that Dr. Jon Kanegawa, of Exeter Township, Berks County, will pay $13,250 in civil penalties for failing to renew his X-ray equipment registration and for failing to pay related annual registration fees since 2003. Kanegawa is the sole practitioner at the dental clinic.

A recent DEP inspection revealed that the X-ray equipment was functioning properly.

“Annual registration fees are necessary to pay for the staffing, equipment and inspection costs of the Radiation Protection Program and to ensure that we can maintain the safety of radiological equipment,” DEP South-central Regional Director Rachel Diamond said.

DEP previously fined Kanegawa for failing to pay annual registration fees. In 1995, he was fined $1,560 for failing to pay fees in a timely matter from 1989 to 1994. After again failing to pay fees from 1995 to 2002, he settled a portion of his past-due fees in July 2006.

X-ray equipment must be registered with DEP within 30 days of acquisition and re-registered every year after that.

X-ray registrants are subject to regular inspections by the department’s Radiation Protection Program. A list of registered operators can be found here.
