CLEARFIELD – The Knights of Columbus Council 409 awarded $1,000 in scholarships to two college-bound students on Sunday, July 17, at the Knights of Columbus building in Clearfield.
Rebecca Davis, daughter of Dave and Nina Davis of Clearfield, and Emily Levin, daughter of Scott and Jean Levin of Grampian, were each presented with a $500 check to benefit them in their future endeavors in college.
Davis will be attending St. Francis University in Loretto, Pa., and major in physical therapy, and Levin will be attending Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in Edinboro, Pa., and major in speech pathology.
All of the applications submitted for consideration for the scholarship were from the three local, Catholic parishes of: St. Bonaventure in Grampian, St. Timothy in Curwensville and St. Francis of Assisi in Clearfield. Davis was chosen from St. Francis and Levin was chosen from St. Bonaventure. The two were chosen based on essays submitted meeting three criteria. The criterion was how they can be modern-day disciples in the 21st century, their church activities and their community activities.
The scholarship committee is comprised of five members of the Knights of Columbus. The awards were presented by Grand Knight Frank Sturniolo, Deputy Grand Knight Randy Lemmo and Tyrone Ford, chairman of the scholarship committee.
“The committee is very proud of Emily and Rebecca,” Ford said. “The selection process was very difficult because of the body of work each applicant presented. The Knights of Columbus are committed to education in our community and it is an honor to do this for our students and their families.”
“In the total expenses of college tuition funding, this may only scratch the surface,” Ford said. “Maybe only a semester’s worth of books, but every little bit helps.”
The hope of the Knights is in years to come that they will have the resources available so they have the ability to award more to the recipients. The money for these scholarships was raised over the span of four months doing pancake and sausage breakfasts.
In weeks to come, Levin will be presented her award in front of the parish of St. Bonaventure.
