Public Health Training Center to Offer Grant Writing Workshop in Clearfield

CLEARFIELD – The Pennsylvania Public Health Training Center will hold a seminar on grant-writing basics July 11 at the Clearfield Campus of Lock Haven University.

The seminar will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Room 100 of Founders Hall. A $35 fee includes workshop materials and lunch. In addition, participants can earn five continuing education contact hour credits in the disciplines of Certified Health Education Specialist, Pennsylvania Board of Nursing, and Social Work.

The seminar will teach participants how upfront preparation can save time further down the road, how to stay current on funding opportunities and how to respond quickly to a funding announcement.  By the end of the day, participants will be able to identify at least two sources of possible funding and two sources of information needed for grant writing.

The seminar is co-sponsored by the Center for Rural Health Practice at Pitt-Bradford and the Chamber of Commerce of Clearfield.  Presenters are Patricia W. Murphy and Barbara L. Folb.

Murphy is president of Cornerstones for Development, a consulting and training firm, with more than 20 years’ experience working with community organizations.  She also teaches graduate courses at the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work in governance, grant-proposal writing, community organizing and development, and working with diverse populations.  Murphy has been a board member and active volunteer with many Western Pennsylvania nonprofits.

Folb is a public health librarian for the Health Sciences Library System at Pitt. She holds a Master of Library Science degree from Pitt and has worked as a corporate librarian at Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield and reference librarian at Carnegie Mellon University.  Folb was a National Library of Medicine Informationist Fellow from 2008 to 2010, earning her Master of Public Health degree and an added certification in evaluation of public health promotion and health education programs at the same time.  As a public health librarian, she has worked closely with the Center for Public Health Practice, providing training for public-health practitioners in Pennsylvania and Ohio on information-seeking and management aspects of public health, including seeking grant funding, searching for public health information and staying current in public health.
