University Park, Pa. — For the first time in program history, Penn State is hosting the NCAA Regional Championships for women’s golf at the Penn State Golf Courses in University Park, Pa. The East Regional action will take place from Thursday.-Saturday, May 10-12, 2012. There will be 24 teams and six individuals not on one of the selected teams participating in the 54-hole regional competition. The tournament will be played on the par-72, 6,246-yard Penn State Blue Course.
This is the first time Penn State has hosted a regional golf championship, men’s or women’s. It will also mark the first time the state of Pennsylvania has held a NCAA Division I Regional Golf Championship. No national championship has been held in the state, either, making this the first NCAA Division I women’s golf event hosted in Pennsylvania.
"We are very excited to host the 2012 NCAA East Regional," said head women’s golf coach Denise St.Pierre. "We have been waiting for this opportunity, and now with some upgrades to our facilities we are able to accommodate the caliber of play this type of event will bring. We look forward to the tournament and hope to be among the top teams invited to participate."
The Regional Championships will lead the winners to Franklin, Tenn., for the 2012 Division I Women’s Golf Championships hosted by Vanderbilt University. The final round will take place at the Vanderbilt Legends Club from May 22-25.
Two other regional championships will take place. The Ohio State University will hold the Central Regional at its Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. The West Regional will take place at Colorado Nationals Golf Club in Erie Colorado. All three regional tournaments will take place from May 10-12.
