Heard on Campus: Mike Krzyzewski with Joe Paterno

"What [Joe Paterno] has been able to do along the way is change the way you teach but never compromise the values of what you’re teaching. That’s what I’ve learned from watching him."

– Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, speaking Monday (June 20) at Eisenhower Auditorium on Penn State’s University Park campus. Krzyzewski joined Penn State football coach Joe Paterno for the taping of an ESPN special, "Difference Makers: Life Lessons with Paterno and Krzyzewski." Continuing on the topic of adapting to new generations of players, Paterno cited something his predecessor as Penn State football coach, Rip Engle, told him: "You want to be flexible, but you never want to lose sight of a great idea."

The two coaches were interviewed by ESPN host Rece Davis and took questions from the crowd at Eisenhower and from the Duke campus. Davis hosted another segment in which former Penn State football players Michael Robinson and Matt Millen and former Duke basketball players Jay Bilas and Jay Williams talked about the experience of playing for the legendary coaches. The 90-minute special airs at 8 p.m. on June 30 on ESPN, continuing on ESPNU at 9 p.m.
