CLEARFIELD COUNTY – Project S.U.C.C.E.S.S. (Schools United in Clearfield County to Empower Students to Succeed) is hosting an OPEN HOUSE at each of the seven site locations in Clearfield County to celebrate and bring local attention to Summer Learning Day 2011. Cen-Clear Child Services, Inc. in collaboration with the seven school districts was awarded a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Education. This grant provides afterschool and summer programming for students in 6th through 8th grades.
Research shows that all children experience learning loss when they don’t have educational activities during the summer. High-quality summer programs help keep kids engaged in learning. “Project S.U.C.C.E.S.S. provides the opportunity to engage participants in extended learning activities in a safe, supervised, drug-free environment. A variety of activities and experiences are provided to encourage participants to learn new skills, improve on skills they already possess, and have fun while learning. Research indicates many students lose more than 2 months of knowledge over the summer.” says Cinde Schuckers, Afterschool Program Director.
In late June and early July, communities around the country will hold events to raise awareness of the importance of high-quality summer learning opportunities in the lives of youth and their families. The highlight is Summer Learning Day on June 21, an annual national event organized by the National Summer Learning Association to focus attention on how summer learning programs help close the achievement gap and promote healthy development.
Summer Learning Day is sponsored by the National Summer Learning Association and is generously supported by the Walmart Foundation. Summer Learning Day has grown from a handful of events in 2004 to about 500 in 49 states in 2010.
Project S.U.C.C.E.S.S. is open to students attending public and private schools in Clearfield County. More information about the afterschool program or other Cen-Clear Child Services, Inc services can be obtained by calling 814-342-5678 or visiting www.cenclear.org.
