George D. Cowfer Sr., 73 of Philipsburg, passed away on June 11, 2011 at his residence.
Born April 17, 1938, he was the son of the late David and Mary (Lee) Cowfer.
He attended the Gearhartville Free United Methodist Church and served in the Army. He worked for several coal companies during his career, including the Avery Coal Company, James J. Cowfer Contracting and Junior Coal Contracting for over 40 years.
He attended the Osceola Schools.
On Nov. 25, 1961 in Osceola Mills, he wed the former Nancy J. Herr, who survives at home.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother James I. Cowfer and and sister Mary E. Shaffer.
He is survived by sons George D. Cowfer Jr. and his wife Rise of Philipsburg and Greg J. Cowfer of Morrisdale; sisters Martha J. Hughes of Philipsburg, Sarah L. Wrye of Philipsburg and Hazel L. Heny of Osceola Mills; brothers David Lee Cowfer of Osceola Mills, John T. Cowfer of Osceola Mills, Walter G. Cowfer and his wife Nancy of Osceola Mills, and Lawrence E. Cowfer and his wife Darlene of Osceola Mills. He is also survived by grandchildren Felicity and Cheyanne Cowfer of Philipsburg and Brittany Cowfer of Morrisdale, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on June 15 at 11 a.m. at the Beezer-Heath Funeral Home, 719 E. Spruce St., Philipsburg, with the Rev. John T. Dill officiating. Burial will be at the IOOF Cemetery in Brisbin. Visitation will be held on June 14 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
