Thirteen Die in Accidents Investigated by State Police During Holiday Weekend

HARRISBURG – Thirteen people were killed and 294 others were injured in accidents investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police during the four-day Memorial Day travel period, Commissioner Frank Noonan said.

State police investigated a total of 808 crashes during the travel period spanning Friday to Monday, Noonan said.

Five of those killed were not wearing seat belts and 83 of the accidents were alcohol-related, including one of the fatal accidents.

Noonan said troopers arrested 357 motorists for driving under the influence; issued 7,934 speeding citations; cited 708 individuals for not wearing seat belts; and issued 115 citations to motorists for not securing children in child safety seats.

During last year’s four-day Memorial Day holiday driving period, 16 people died and 290 were injured in 776 crashes to which troopers responded.

Noonan said the numbers cover only those accidents investigated by state police and do not include statistics on incidents to which other law-enforcement agencies in Pennsylvania responded.
