HYDE – Staked to a three-run lead before he walked to the Bison Sports Complex mound, Indian Valley sophomore Rodney Patterson hurled six shutout innings for a 10-2 win over the Clearfield Area High School baseball team Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors, boasting a lineup with five regulars hitting better than .400, got to three Bison pitchers for 18 hits to hike their team batting average to .363.
Joe McElwain led the visitors with four hits, one a double, in raising his average to a team-best .533.
Tanner Kibe and Cody Heane had three singles apiece, while Zane McNitt and Brendon Fultz each had two hits.
McNitt drove in three runs and Kibe had a pair of RBIs.
Patterson, who struck out four and walked one for his first win in three decisions, held the Bisons to four hits until the seventh.
Then, Clearfield (4-5) doubled its total with Drew Brown and Derek Danver driving in the runs with their second singles of the Mountain League crossover game.
After surrendering four hits in the first inning, loser Tyler Jacobson kept the Warriors in check until the fifth. He departed after four consecutive hits, one a two-run single by McNitt, gave Indian Valley (7-4) a 6-0 lead with one out.
Freshman Wyatt Westen, make his first varsity appearance, got out of the inning but ran into trouble in the sixth. Levi North doubled and scored on Kibe’s single, Heane was hit by a pitch and McElwain singled.
Ronny Ogden relieved and escaped the bases-loaded jam via a double play started by Jacobson on a grounder to third and a strikeout.
However, Indian Valley tacked on three runs in the seventh, one on a double steal and one on a bases-loaded walk.
In the morning, the Warriors stopped at Philipsburg to complete a suspended game and had their six-game winning streak halted. They rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh inning to knot the score, but Philipsburg-Osceola prevailed 8-7 in the first extra inning.
Danver and Jacobson extended their hitting streaks to seven games, while Andrew Redden saw his seven-game streak end.
Weather permitting, Clearfield will visit Tyrone Monday, host Philipsburg-Osceola Tuesday, travel to Philipsburg Wednesday, entertain Punxsutawney Thursday and journey to Mifflintown to play Juniata Friday.
