CURWENSVILLE – Following two months of turmoil, Curwensville Borough Council reorganized.
Council members found themselves in the position to reorganize after former council president Mark Curulla resigned from his post last month. That came a month after Curulla resigned, but the action wasn’t formally approved by council. Questions were later raised as to whether the resignation counted. A motion made by council member Sam Ettaro for Curulla not to continue as president ended in a 3-3 tie. The mayor was not present to cast the tiebreaker. Following that, Curulla officially resigned, with council voting to accept, 5-1, with Julie Girardi voting against.
On Monday evening, the topic was brought up early in a meeting that started five minutes earlier than it’s advertised time of 7 p.m. While it was briefly discussed, it was later voted on at the end of the meeting. Curulla nominated Fred Sopic to the position of president, with Girardi seconding the motion. It passed unanimously. Mike Komonczi nominated Sam Ettaro to serve as vice-president, with Don O’Dell seconding. The motion passed 5-1, with Curulla voting no.
Council also approved a resolution, pending their solicitor’s review, setting the duties of elected positions within council, such as president, vice-president, and so on. A similar resolution, setting the committees, their duties and a book of employee job descriptions will be voted upon at a later date.
