Clarence “Fred” Furguiel, 81, of Philipsburg died Wednesday at the DuBois Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 25, 1930 in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Joseph and Rose Furguiel. Mr. Furguiel was Protestant by faith.

He served in the United States Army and Air Force and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Louis Jenkins Post #3450, Philipsburg. He was a coal miner and later worked as a coal broker until his retirement.

Mr. Furguiel wed the former Grace A. Nolan in Clearfield May 7, 1965. She preceded him in death Jan. 8, 2002. He’s survived by his companion, Mary “Dee” Hughes of Philipsburg.

In addition to his parents and wife, he’s preceded in death by one son, Thomas Lamb; one sister, Yvonne; and one granddaughter, Valerie Bryan.

Surviving are four daughters, Nancy Bryan and her Marshall of Philipsburg; Sandy Kitchen of North Carolina; and Julie and Renee Furguiel. He’s also survived by two brothers, Joseph Furguiel and his wife, Margaret of South Carolina and Peter Furguiel of Norway and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Beezer-Heath Funeral Home, 719 East Spruce St., Philipsburg, with the Rev. William R. Walker officiating. Interment will be at the Philipsburg Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 – 4 p.m. and 6 – 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Military honors will be accorded by members of the Moshannon Valley Independent Honor Guard.
