Howe named Big Ten Golfer of the Week

University Park, Pa. — Senior T.J. Howe (Osceola, Pa.) captured the title of Big Ten Golfer of the Week as announced by conference officials Wednesday afternoon.

In the second tournament of Penn State’s spring campaign, the talented senior finished tied for third, just one stroke behind first place. In the first round at The Club at Pinehurst No. 6, Howe shot a 1-under par 70. Howe continued to lead his team in the second round, shooting a 75 to bring his two-round total to 145. In the final round Howe fired his tournament low, a 3-under par 68, capturing a tied for third finish and ultimately the honorable title of Big Ten Golfer of the Week. This award marks the second of Howe’s career.

"T.J. has shown a certain mastery of the Pinehurst courses," said Head Coach Greg Nye. "He has shown himself capable of quickly elevating his play early in the year once again."

The Pinehurst Intercollegiate has proven to be a favorite for Penn State in the past years, having won the tournament title in 2009 and tying for third in 2010. This year proved to be no different as Howe led the Nittany Lions to an overall tie for third with VCU, posting rounds of 293-301-288 (882).

Howe is the first Penn State golfer to be named Big Ten Golfer of the Week since Kevin Foley (Somerville, N.J.) received the title on April 14, 2010.

Penn State returns to action April 2-3 when they travel to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to compete at the LSU Intercollegiate.
