JOC Rejects Quote for Refurbishing Cooler, Freezer Units at CCCTC

CCCTC to Advertise Bids for Brand New Units

CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Career and Technology Center’s Joint Operating Committee on Monday night rejected the $4,000 quote from the Charles Heating Center for refurbishing the cooler and freezer units in the culinary arts department.

Committee members Rodney Kitko of the Moshannon Valley School District; Ken Veihdeffer of the Curwensville Area School District; James Smith of the Philipsburg-Osceola School District; and Phil Carr of the Clearfield Area School District all voted to reject the quote.

Committee members Larry Allen of the West Branch Area School District and Jason Sunderland of the Harmony Area School District were absent from the meeting.

Instead, the JOC agreed on the advertisement of bids for brand new freezer and cooler units. The brand new units are expected to cost approximately $20,000 to $22,000, said Executive Director Lois Richards.

According to her, the current units have continued to break down at the CCCTC. She said these units are original to the school, which is 40 years old, and should have been replaced during its renovation a few years ago.

In the non-voting meeting, Richards explained the quote from the Charles Heating Center was only for the replacement of fans and condensers. It would also include a one-year warranty, she said.

“If the fans and condensers are going, I think it’s safe to say the rest isn’t too far behind,” Carr said.

When asked by Kitko for a recommendation, Assistant Director William Carbone believed it would be wise to invest in new freezer and cooler units.

Richards added, “Remember, these units are 40 years old; they’re original to the school. They should have been replaced during the renovation but were not.”

Kathie Pearcy, business manager for the CCCTC, indicated that there was approximately $29,000 leftover from the renovation. She said it could be used toward the purchase of the new freezer and cooler units.
