HIGHLAND PARK – The Clearfield Area High School girls basketball team halted an eight-game losing streak by beating Curwensville Monday, but the Bisons weren’t able to sustain that momentum Wednesday night and ended the season with a 64-38 loss to Indian Valley.
The Mountain League crossover make-up game was the first and last meeting between the two teams and the final game on the Warriors’ home floor, because Indian Valley is merging with arch-rival Lewistown to form a yet-to-be-named school district that will be Class AAAA in most sports beginning in 2011-12.
Coach Joey Castagnolo’s Lady Bisons, who finished 3-19 with an 0-10 Allegheny Division record in their first Mountain League season, got 11 points from Rachel Thompson and nine from Lisa Ambuski. The two juniors had a pair of three-pointers apiece.
Johanna Ryan netted a fifth trey, Clearfield’s second-highest total of the season.
Junior Sammie Chestnut paced Indian Valley (10-12) with 20 points, while Whitney Corbin and Priscilla Weaver chipped in 13 and 11, respectively.
The Warriors led 13-7 after one quarter and extended the margin to 31-13 by halftime.
The Lady Bisons came out of the locker room and played one of their best offensive quarters of 2010-11 with 18 points but couldn’t gain any ground on the hosts, who then proceeded increase their lead by eight points in the fourth period.
Indiana Valley won the prelim 39-30.
Ryan scored 13 points for coach Jerry Stewart’s Clearfield junior varsity, which finished 13-6.
