CLEARFIELD — An old sports adage says a win is a win and that was certainly on display Tuesday evening as the Clearfield Bison wrestling team squeaked by the St. Marys Flying Dutch 37-32. Both teams were at less than full strength with the Dutch forfeiting three bouts and the Bisons missing Cliff Hill from the starting lineup.
The match started traditionally at 103 pounds with senior Shane Peters picking up his 20th win of the year as he received the first of the three Dutch forfeits. Christian Stone also earned his 20th win on the season and put the Bisons up 9-0 by defeating Trenton Bowers, 7-2, at 112.
St. Marys made it a one point match by winning the next two bouts. In the most entertaining contest of the night, Evan Smith beat Dylan Graham 9-8 at 119 and then Alex Coudriet registered a third period, 15-0, technical fall over Frankie Aveni to make the team score 9-8.
At 130, Clearfield’s Nolan Barger built a 9-0 lead over Tyler Yetzer before locking up a cradle and pinning the Dutchman in 2:36. St. Marys pulled to within one point again, 15-14, when Darren Lyon caught Max Von Gunden for a third period fall. Von Gunden was leading 4-0 in the bout before getting reversed to his back.
The Dutch would grab their first lead of the night, 17-15, after Sam Miller defeated Troy Danver, 4-2, at 140. The Bisons then regained the lead at 145 as Andrew Hill scored a 16-5 major decision over Alex Feldbauer.
When the Dutch’s Allen Gursky bested Cody Lansberry, 5-4, at 152, the match had its third one point difference, 20-19, this time with St. Marys out in front.
The Bisons were able to put the match away in the next three bouts led by Shane Harper’s big first period pin over Ben Cheatle. Harper pancaked the Dutchman, finishing him off in just 43 seconds. “Shane’s a senior and knew what had to be done at this point in the match,” said Bison head coach Jeff Aveni.
Back to back forfeits for the Bisons at 171 and 189 made the score 37-20 and locked up the dual meet victory for Clearfield. The Dutch made things look respectable after James Antonelli pinned Gabe Ford in 59 seconds at 215 and Kevin Hoy decked Jordan Lancaster in 1:54 at 285, setting the final score at 37-32.
Clearfield’s (8-2) next dual meet will be Friday as they host the Lewistown Panthers.
