The Clearfield County commissioners proclaimed January as Big Brothers Big Sisters month at its work shop meeting on Tuesday.

Lynda Saggese of Big Brothers Big Sisters said their organization has been a part of the Children’s Aid Society since 1986, providing adult role models to area youth.

“It really makes a difference in their lives, and we encourage all citizens to provide mentoring to young people,” she said.

She said that researchers have found that children who are matched through the program are 46 percent less likely to start using drugs; 27 percent less likely to start drinking; 33 percent less likely to hit someone; 52 percent less likely to skip a day of school; and 37 percent less likely to skip a class.

In addition, Saggese said that the mentored youth are more trusting of their parents and guardians, less likely to lie to them and feel more supported and less criticized by their peers and friends.
