PENFIELD- Although not a lot of snow has fallen yet, there are still opportunities for folks to get outside and enjoy the winter season at Parker Dam State Park.
Cold temperatures have helped put early ice on Parker Lake this winter. The ice depth is now safe for larger groups of people, and the park staff has worked to clear an ice skating rink in the area of the beach for visitors to enjoy. There is also an area cleared for children (and adults) that may not have skates to slide around on in their shoes or boots.
The ice, so far, looks to be in the best shape of the past several winters. To keep it that way for as much of the winter season as possible, the park staff asks visitors using the ice to take a moment and review a few simple rules, posted around the rink.
If snow has fallen, park staff will work as soon as they are able, to clear the rink of new snow. A fire barrel and benches have been placed for the comfort of users, but firewood is not provided.

Currently, at both Parker Dam and S.B. Elliott State Parks, conditions remain poor for sledding, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. However, when the snow finally does fly in greater amounts, 5.5 miles of trail are groomed for cross-country skiing at Parker Dam. In addition, there are many other trails that are perfect for snowshoeing and designated hills for sledding.
Snowmobilers can use the park as a trailhead for the many miles of state forest roads that are open until the end of March. Again, as conditions change, visitors are to check both parks’ “Winter Report.” Finally, make plans now for the Clearfield YMCA’s Winter Festival, to be held at Parker Dam State Park on Jan. 29 – 30.
