Winter Hike – Laurel Run Trail
10 a.m. – Lou and Helen Adams C.C.C. Museum
“Winter Trails Day”
Celebrate Winter Trails Day by hiking one of the park’s nicest trails. The journey will take you along Laurel Run and loop back into the main park area along Mud Run Road. It’ll be about a two-mile total hike, with minimal elevation change. Be prepared for snow and cold weather, and have your camera along– you never know.
Learn to Ice Skate:
1:00 p.m. – Beach House
It’s one of the most fun things to do outside in the cold weather. But if you’re not sure how, or it’s been a while, you’ll learn all of the basics of getting around on the ice on skates. For children or adults how don’t have their own skates, the staff will have many different skates and sizes that you may borrow.
Saturday Jan. 15
Ice Fishing Basics:
10 a.m.- Beach House
You’ll learn all the basics that can get you started. You’ll also learn how to be the most comfortable and safe while ice fishing. The staff will have a variety of equipment to try and practice with. If you’re 16 or older, bring your 2011 fishing license.
Snowshoe Basics:
1 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom
Come learn the history of the snowshoe, how they work, and try out a pair of the park’s snowshoes as we take a short walk. You’ll find out how different types and sizes of snowshoes can help you traverse in differing snow conditions. Dress appropriately for a short lesson inside and the weather outside.
Sunday, Jan. 16
Learn to Cross-country Ski:
10 a.m. – Environmental Education Classroom
(Note: $3 fee) You’ll be given the opportunity to learn how to get strapped onto the proper sized equipment, why the skis work the way that they do, and then practice. The staff will provide you with the equipment (limited number and sizes). They now can provide equipment for children and youth.
Learn to Ice Skate:
1 p.m. – Beach House
It’s the same program, but on different day. See Saturday, Jan. 8 description for details. Remember, the staff will have skates if you need them.
