Alfred B. Hurwitz, 83 of Philipsburg, passed away on Dec. 18, 2010 at his residence.
Born Jan. 15, 1927, he was the son of the late Jacob and Ann (Finberg) Hurwitz.
He was a member of Agudath Achim Congregation Synagogue in Altoona, he was a Coast Guard division of the Merchant MarinesVeteran of WWII, and he was a member of the Philipsburg American Legion John Ashley Dennis Post #3450 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Louis Jenkins Post #3450, both of Philipsburg.
After his discharge from the Merchant Marines in 1945, he returned to Philipsburg to work with his family’s furniture and hardwarde store. Thereafter, he and his brother Edsel, formed Hurwitz Brothers, a real estate development company in Philipsburg.
He was a graduate of Philipsburg High School.
On March 30, 1952, he wed the former Anita Krentzman in Lewistown. She survives him at home.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by daughter Fran Hurwitz of Pittsburgh; son Irvin Hurwitz and his wife Janet of Paoli; brother Edsel Hurwitz and his wife Marjorie of Philipsburg; grandchildren Ana Hurwitz of Pittsburgh and Samuel and Rachel Hurwitz of Paoli and four nieces.
Funeral services will be held on Dec. 20 at 11 a.m. at the Beezer-Heath Funeral Home, 719 E. Spruce St., Philipsburg, with Cantor G. Michael Horwitz officiating. Burial will be in the Sons of Israel Congregation Cemetery in Philipsburg. Military Honors will be accorded by the Moshannon Valley Independent Honor Guard.
