Central Pulls Away in Second Half to Down Clearfield 50-35

MARTINSBURG – Clearfield stayed with Central through two quarters, but the Scarlet Dragons outscored the Bisons 28-14 in the second half for a 50-35 victory in scholastic basketball action Thursday night.
 
Bison turnovers and Scarlet Dragon second-chance points were pivotal in the third period, when the hosts took control.
 
The back-and-forth first half had ended with Central (2-2) ahead 22-21.
 
Clearfield (0-2) did regain the lead early in the second half of the Mountain League Allegheny Division game but was unable to rally after falling behind 40-28 going to the fourth quarter.
 
Pat Schon paced Central with a game-high 14 points, while Brandon Myers and Matt Ritchey chipped in 11 and 10, respectively.
 
Clearfield got nine points from Jack Mellgard and eight from Andrew Redden.
 
Foul shooting was critical, the Scarlet Dragons netting 17 of 29 free throws as Redden, Curtis Frye and Robbie Myers fouled out.
 
The Bisons went to the line only five times.
 
They’ll step outside of the league to visit District 9 rival DuBois Friday night.
 
Clearfield’s junior varsity evened its record at 1-1 with a 33-17 win. Mike Wood scored eight points for the Bison underclassmen.
