Campus Corner: Caldwell Earns First Dual Meet Win

UNIVERSITY PARK – Two days after recording the first dual meet win of his Lock Haven career, redshirt senior Derek Caldwell of Curwensville was bumped up two weights and was one of only two Bald Eagles not to give up bonus points in a 48-0 shutout by No. 5-ranked Penn State in front of a Rec Hall crowd of 4,182 Sunday afternoon.
 
Caldwell and Nick Ruggear went to the third period 2-2, but the Nittany Lion freshman engineered two of his three takedowns for a 7-3 lead before Caldwell got his fourth escape and managed a late takedown. The final was 8-6.
 
On Wednesday, Caldwell major decisioned Dave Cox 13-3 as Lock Haven (3-3) rolled past Millersville 37-3 in a triangular meet at Lewistown High School.
 
He did not wrestle against Ohio University, which defeated the Bald Eagles 33-6.
 
Caldwell is 1-1 in duals and 3-3 overall.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
 
GREENSBURG – Junior forward Todd Hryn of Clearfield made two free throws and pulled down one defensive rebound as Pitt-Greensburg (3-5) cracked the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win column by trimming Hilbert (N.Y.) 80-65 in Chambers Hall Saturday.
 
The Bobcats had dropped their first three conference outings, including 71-48 to LaRoche at Pittsburgh on Wednesday, when Hryn had one rebound and one steal.
 
Hryn has come off the bench every game, producing 11 points, 12 rebounds, one assist, three steals and one blocked shot.

NEW WILMINGTON – Sophomore guard Matt Shiner of Clearfield hit a three-pointer for Wesminster in a 99-81 non-conference loss to visiting Hiram (Ohio) in Buz Ridl Gymnasium last Wednesday.
 
He did not play in the Titans’ 79-77 Presidents’ Athletic Conference loss to Thomas Moore at Crestview Hills, Ky., Saturday.
 
Shiner has netted a pair of three-pointers to go with one assist and one steal in four appearances.

MEN’S SWIMMING
 
NEW WILMINGTON – Seniors John and Chris Bodle of Clearfield placed in individual events as Westminster (4-1) defeated Penn State Behrend 165-125 in a non-conference meet at the Westminster Natatorium Saturday.
 
John finished fourth in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:20.14 while Chris was fifth in the 200 freestyle in 1:55.
 
They swam the final two legs for the Titan ‘C’ 400-medley relay team that placed fifth in 3:57.08. John posted a 1:00.55 fly leg and Chris a 42.29 anchor.
 
Chris was a point-getter in three events at the Wooster (Ohio) Invitational Dec. 3-4.
 
He qualified for the ‘C’ finals in the 200 fly and 400 individual medley events, placing 20th in 2:10.16 in the former and 24th in 4:40.94 in the latter. He also led off with a 1:55.90 for the Titan ‘B’ 800 free relay team that eanred 26 points by finishing 14th in 7:34.94.
 
John also made the ‘C’ final in the 200 fly and finished 21st in 2:16.72, nearly two full seconds faster than his prelim time.
 
He also was 27th in the 200 IM prelims in 2:11.18.
 
Westminster accumulated 837 points to claim fifth place in the 10-team field.
