AWC, Pets Come First Coordinate Large Dog Food Drive

(GantDaily Graphic)

The Animal Welfare Council of the Alleghenies had the opportunity to work with Pets Come First rescue group out of Lemont, PA to coordinate the large donation of both dry and canned dog food from Del’monte Foods, PA. Over 14,000 lbs of pet food combined has been distributed to local Pet Food Pantries in Centre, Mifflin and Juniata counties already and the balance of food will now also be available in Clearfield County for distribution.

The Animal Welfare Council of the Alleghenies is working with the local food banks in the Clearfield County Area, to make the pet food available to families in need. To obtain the food, interested individuals should contact the following local food banks where they will be given a voucher for the pet food: Clearfield, Curwensville, Houtzdale, Osceola Mills, Glendale, and West Branch areas.  With the voucher, the food can then be picked up at the Allegheny Spay & Neuter Clinic located at 1937 Daisy Street Extension in Clearfield.  The clinic is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Other services offered at the Allegheny Spay & Neuter Clinic in addition to canine and feline spay and neutering are, micro-chip lost animal protection, Clearfield County Dog License, Rabies Vaccines and Distemper Vaccines.

In these tough economic times it is becoming increasingly difficult for pet owners to keep up with pet food and other related costs.  Due to this, shelters are seeing an alarming number of pets surrendered because their owners can’t afford to feed them.  It is the Animal Welfare Council’s hope that this project will help to reduce this trend in this area. Established in the fall of 2006 by a group of individuals who share the same concern and passion for animals in the community, the Animal Welfare Council strives to fulfill the needs of local animals and their owners.  For more information on the free pet food, the Animal Welfare Council or the clinic, contact 345-5443.
