Maxine Catherine Liegey, 84, of Clearfield died Nov. 27, 2010 peacefully at Colonial Courtyard, Clearfield surrounded by her family.
Born Oct. 3, 1926 in Clearfield, she was the daughter of George McBride and Catherine Steinkirchner McBride. She wed Dennis Francis Liegey Sr. on June 4, 1948.
She graduated from St. Francis School and received her R.N. at St. Vincent’s Nursing School in Erie. She attended Villa Maria College where her theory was taught. She worked in Clearfield as Asst. Supervisor in the Operating Room and then went to Benson Sanitarium as the O.R. Supervisor and later as Superintendent of the hospital.
She returned to Clearfield Hospital and became night supervisor for 13 years. When the ICU-CCU of Clearfield Hospital was opened, she became supervisor of the unit. Maxine was coordinator of a Regional Medical program which used the RoCom system to train nurses in cardiac nursing. The Coronary Care Courses extended to hospitals in the surrounding counties. In 1970, she was given the responsibility of reorganizing the Home Health Dept. of Clearfield Hospital and opened offices in DuBois, Snow Shoe and Houtzdale. During her tenure in Home Health she was elected to the Nominating Committee of the Assembly of Ambulatory & Home Care Services of the American Hospital Association. In 1973, she became Vice-President of Patient Nursing Services at Clearfield Hospital. She retired from Clearfield Hospital in January 1979.
She was a member of the American Heart Association, Cancer Association, St. Francis Catholic Church and the Clearfield Hospital School Nurses Alumni.
She was a loving wife and mother survived by her son Dennis and wife Jean, her daughter Debra Swackhammer, granddaughter, Stephanie Lukens and husband Eric, grandson, Dennis III and companion Hilaree Dixon, and two great-grandchildren Gavin and Maxwell Lukens.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis in 1994, her parents and all her brothers and sisters, Howard, Jack, Harry, George, Joseph, Robert, Arvella and Dorothy.
A Memorial Mass will be said at the St. Francis Catholic Church, Clearfield on Friday at 10 a.m. with Msgr. Henry L. Krebs as celebrant. Interment will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Frenchville.
Friends will be received at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield on Thursday from 6-8 p.m.
