Abandoned Mine in Knox Township to be Reclaimed

HARRISBURG – State Rep. Camille “Bud” George, D-74 of Clearfield County, said  that a 9-acre abandoned mine in Knox Township will be reclaimed at no cost to taxpayers.

The state Department of Environmental Protection’s Moshannon District Office awarded the no-cost contract to Earthmovers Unlimited Inc. of Kylertown to reclaim 9.2-acres of abandoned mine land, 600-feet of highwall and 3.6-acres of underground mine.

The site, about one mile southeast of Oshanter along Mays Road, will be re-graded to resemble original contours. About 139 tons per acre of alkaline material will be applied to the mining area

The work is valued at $64,400, and Earthmovers Unlimited will recover about 12,000 tons of remaining coal from the site. Blasting and reprocessing at the site is prohibited.

The mine was abandoned by the Clyde G. Thompson Coal Co. in the late 1940s.
