Clearfield Cross Country Teams Compete at Mountain League Championships

LEWISTOWN — The Clearfield boy’s and girl’s cross country teams traveled to Lewistown to compete in their first ever Mountain Athletic League Championships.

Both teams performed very well against some strong competition.

The girl’s placed fourth out of five scoring teams and ten teams total. They were only seven points out of second place, as only ten points separated teams two through five. The Indian Valley girls easily outdistanced the runners up, Penns Valley, by a score of 48 to 80. Bellefonte was third with 81 points and Clearfield was right behind with 87.

Girls scoring: Indian Valley – 48, Penns Valley – 80, Bellefonte – 81, Clearfield – 87, Philipsburg – 90.

The individual champion was Brooke King of Indian Valley who crossed the tape in a time of 20:22. The top finisher for Clearfield was junior Juliana Mellgard who placed fourth with a time of 21:40.

Clearfield head coach John Jacob commented afterwards that, “…we had some strong performances from Julian Mellgard and Johanna Ryan, both placing in the top 10 and becoming Mountain League All-stars. Abby (Jury), Becca (Ward), and Morgen (Turner) also made some key moves in the race to put the team in a good position.

“I was very proud of the way the girls ran and look forward to the district championships next Saturday (October 30 at Ridgway).”

The boys team placed sixth out of ten scoring teams. Indian Valley also claimed the boys title by beating Penns Valley 38-59.

Boys scoring: Indian Valley – 38, Penns Valley – 59, Bellefonte – 82, Central Mountain – 110, Philipsburg – 152, Clearfield – 172, Tyrone – 177, Central – 188, Lewistown – 189, BEA – 293.

The individuual champion was Lewistown’s Zach Moore who ran a 16:41. The top finisher for Clearfield was Adam Jury who placed 24th with a time of 19:07.

Concerning the boys team coach Jacob added, “…Adam, Alex (Coble), and Jesse (Neyman) were all separated by less than ten seconds. They continue to improve and are hoping to break 19 minutes.”
