Philipsburg PSP Warns Residents of Online, Mail Scams Through Initiative

PHILIPSBURG – Because Philipsburg residents have been the targets of Internet and mail scams in recent weeks, a crime prevention initiative is currently under way in order to prevent the same.

“Fortunately, most of the potential victims were able to thwart (these) scams and didn’t suffer any financial loss,” said Cpl. Joseph G. Cigich of the Philipsburg-based State Police.  He said the potential scammers have used a variety of means to defraud “unsuspecting citizens.”

For most part, he said these scams indicate that residents have won money and must pay taxes to receive the winnings. However, he said that others send residents counterfeit money orders or checks.

Cigich said, “The public is urged to be suspicious of any unsolicited computer or mail contacts, (which are) requesting that they send money to an unknown account and or address.”
