Friday, Oct. 1

Natural Wonder Series: Nocturnal Creatures

2 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom

What animals are roaming the forest and how do they survive, while you’re cozy asleep in bed at night?  This is a great opportunity for home-school students, or anyone, to learn more about the creatures who roam at night. 

Pennsylvania Elk

7 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater

They are one of the most viewed wildlife in Pennsylvania.  Learn about these magnificent creatures and how they survive.  You’ll also learn how wildlife officials try to manage PA’s elk herd.

Sunday, Oct. 3

Tree Hike and Leaf ID

2 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom

A “Get Outdoors PA” Program

Whether you need to complete a school leaf collection or just want to know how we identify our common leaves, this informative hike through the day use area will fulfill your need.  Dress for a walk outdoors.

Tea and Talk 

6 p.m. – Beach House steps

Meet for some hot, sweet fern/mountain mint tea grown right here in the park. You will have to bring along a cup/mug suitable for hot beverages, and your questions about the park and its wildlife.

Friday, Oct. 8

Pennsylvania Black Bears

7 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom

Black bears do live at Parker Dam State Park, and visitors should know how to act and react when bears are in the area.  They have an interesting life here in our forests and you’ll get to see some great video of it. 

Saturday, Oct. 9

History Hike

  2 p.m. – Beach House steps

A “Get Outdoors PA” Program

Take an easy walk and learn about Parker Dam before it became a park.  This area has changed significantly over the years.  If the water’s not too high, we will cross the spillway rocks and complete a loop around the lake.

Sunday, Oct. 10

Logslide and Stumpfield Trails

10 a.m. – Logslide Display (extra car parking)

A “Get Outdoors PA” Program

Find out about the park’s history, its wildlife, or anything that you want to ask the park’s Naturalist.  Please wear appropriate shoes, there may be one or 2 wet areas.

Saturday, Oct. 16

GPS to Geocaching 

3 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom

A “Get Outdoors PA” Program

If you’re not familiar with a GPS’s functions, or would like to give one a try, come borrow one of the park’s (first come, first served) or learn with your own. There’s a short walk, please dress accordingly.

Beavers

7 p.m.- Environmental Education Classroom

You’ll see them in the evening around the lake.  Find out what they’re up to and more.  What you see in this video may surprise you.

Sunday, Oct. 17

Wild Edibles Hike 

3 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom

A “Get Outdoors PA” Program

Many of our native plants can be used for sustenance.  You’ll learn about several of them, including how to identify and use them properly.  You may even get a sample to try for yourself.

Tea and Talk 

6 p.m. – Beach House steps

Matchless Fire

6:30 p.m.- Campground Amphitheater

A “Get Outdoors PA” Program

We’ll start the amphitheater campfire without a single match.  Learn how fire was once started before lighters and matches, and try your hand at the primitive methods.

Pennsylvania Owls

7 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater

Specialized for nocturnal predation, owls have some pretty amazing adaptations.  Learn more about owls, especially the ones you can see in Pennsylvania, and their cool adaptations.  Come be astounded by just how much you may not know about them. 

Saturday, Oct. 23

5th Annual Fall Festival and Pumpkin Float

 1 – 8 p.m.- Day Use Area

Participate in great, fun, autumn heritage activities; see what the craft vendors have to offer, and more.  You have to see what the Pumpkin Float is all about!  Check for details and pick up a schedule at the Park Office.  More information will follow in October.
