Penn State-Temple gridiron series to continue

University Park, Pa. — Penn State and Temple will continue to meet on the gridiron well into the middle of the decade.

Penn State Director of Athletics Tim Curley and Temple Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw announced today that the Nittany Lions and Owls have agreed to play in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

The long-time intrastate rivals will be meeting for the 40th time this Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. kick in Beaver Stadium. The teams are in the midst of playing over seven consecutive years. Penn State will travel to Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Sept. 17, 2011 and the Owls will return to State College on Sept. 22, 2012. The Nittany Lions lead the series, 35-3-1.

The three series games recently added will have Temple visiting Penn State on August 30, 2014 and on Sept. 17, 2016. The Nittany Lions will play in Philadelphia on Sept. 19, 2015.

Penn State is playing 2009 BCS National Champion Alabama this year and in 2011. The Nittany Lions will play Virginia in 2012 and ’13, Navy in 2012, Syracuse in 2013 and Rutgers in 2014 and ’15. During the past decade, Penn State also has had non-conference series with Miami (Fla.), Nebraska, Virginia, Boston College, Notre Dame and Syracuse.

The Big Ten Network will televise Saturday’s clash between No. 23/20 Penn State (2-1) and Temple (3-0). The Nittany Lions shut out Kent State, 24-0, last Saturday, while the Owls defeated Connecticut, 30-16, improving to 3-0 for the first time since 1979, under head coach Al Golden, a former Penn State co-captain and assistant coach.
