Nixon, Hoffner, Kot Michuck, and Kline Pick Up Victories at Hummingbird Speedway

Submitted by Hummingbird Speedway

Once again the weather threatened to put a damper on the evening’s activities at Hummingbird Speedway. But Mother Nature did not prevail on Emergency Services Personnel Night as the racing program was completed shortly before it began to rain. Adding to their class leading win totals on the season were Adam Nixon of Grampian in the Four Cylinders, Joe Kot of DuBois in the Street Stocks, and Luke Hoffner of Turbotville in the Limited Late Models. Dustin Michuck of St. Marys, subbing for Matt Heindl, put that Pure Stock car back into Victory Lane, and Jacob Kline of Sykesville picked up his second Front-Wheel Drive 4-Cylinder win of the season. Each of the winners received a plaque courtesy of the Falls Creek Volunteer Fire Department.

The first feature to hit the track was the Four Cylinder class, with Mike Anderson and Alan Barnett on the front row. Anderson jumped out to the early lead and was holding off Adam Nixon until he began to fade and Nixon got by on lap seven. At the halfway point Nixon led, with Anderson second, Barnett third, Randy Albert fourth, and George Bailey fifth. A caution on lap twelve bunched the field back up but Nixon pulled away on the restart and went on to capture his sixth win of the season. He was followed across the line by Anderson, Barnett, Tim Bailey, and Albert. Nixon also won the lone heat race.

Next up were the Limited Late Models. Dwayne Brooks and Luke Hoffner led a field of 18 cars to the green flag. Brooks led early, but Hoffner stayed close. Brooks held off Hoffner through several cautions and the ensuing restarts. By lap seven Brooks and Hoffner began to put some distance on the rest of the field. Hoffner began working the outside, and on lap eleven he got by Brooks to take over the lead. As flagman Bob Sullinger showed them the crossed flags indicating the halfway point it was Hoffner, Brooks, Cody Schultz, John Chesnalavich Jr., and Chris Farrell. By lap sixteen the leaders were in heavy lapped traffic. Hoffner began to pull away but with the laps winding down there were again several cautions for minor spins. Hoffner was able to hold off Brooks on the restarts and visit Victory Lane for the sixth time this season. Following Hoffner and Brooks were Farrell, Schultz, and Scott Stein. Farrell and Stein had impressive runs from their eleventh and twelfth starting spots, respectively. Heat winners were Schultz, Farrell, and Brooks.

Joe Kot and Gary Little made up the front row to start the Street Stock feature. Kot took the early lead with Jamie Price was giving chase. After several early cautions, Kot began to pull away as Little, Price, and Paul Kot battled three-wide for second. At the halfway mark, it was Joe Kot, Price, Little, Paul Kot, and Brandon Connor. A caution on lap ten again erased Kot’s lead but he pulled away again on the restart as Price & Little battled for second. Kot endured several more restarts and hung on for win number six of 2010, and his 30th career victory at Hummingbird Speedway. Price was second, followed by Little, Paul Kot, and newcomer Rich Waltman. Joe Kot and Little won the heats.

Dustin Michuck was subbing for Matt Heindl and started on the front row, with Ryan Hess alongside. Those two battled side-by-side for much of the event. Michuck took the lead at the start, but Hess got by on the outside for the lead on lap three. Michuck came right back on the inside to lead lap four. Behind them, Steve Arthurs, Dustin Challingsworth, and Ryan Jones held down spots three through five halfway through the event. Michuck and Hess continued to provide excitement for the fans as they battled to the finish with Michuck barely holding off Hess for the win. Challingsworth was third, followed by Arthurs and Shawm Munoz. Hess and Michuck also won the heats.

With threatening weather approaching, the Front-Wheel Drive 4-Cylinders began their feature with Aaron Luzier and Shawn Fedder on the front row. Fedder led lap one, but Jacob Kline moved from his third starting spot to take the lead on lap two. He began to pull away, and at the halfway point it was Kline, Fedder, Mike Lucas, Bryan Warren, and Luzier. Several late cautions gave the field another shot at catching Kline, but he was not to be denied as he held on for his first win since Opening Night. Following him across the line were Fedder, Lucas, Warren, and Luzier. Dustin Kemp and Chris Hickok were the heat race winners.

Racing continues next Saturday with Hummingbird Speedway’s premier event, the Mick Orsich Memorial Late Model Open. Super late models with aluminum block motors will join the speedway’s regular steel block competitors for the $2000 to win event. The show is a tribute to the memory of the track’s former manager and flagman. Fund raising also continues for the Hahne Cancer Center in DuBois, as a Chinese Auction will be held at the track. Gates open at 3:30 and racing begins at 6:00PM sharp. For more information, visit the track’s website at www.hummingbirdspeedway.com.
