CLEARFIELD — The Clearfield Bison boy’s golf team hosted their first match of the year Thursday at the Clearfield-Curwensville Country Club when league foes Tyrone and Bellefonte came to town.
In conditions that were very windy, leading to hard-earned scores, Tyrone managed to shoot 322 as a team while Bellefonte shot a 385 and the hosts scored a 390.
Bison head coach Chad Gearhart noted that, ” Tyrone has a very strong team this year, they are well balanced and know how to score away from their home course of Sinking Valley”.
The medalists for each team were Tyrone’s Jimmy Ferguson with a 74, Alex Fisher and John Gaylor of Clearfield with 92’s and Robbie Proper shot a 94 to pace Bellefonte.
In regards to the close loss to Bellefonte, Gearhart stated that, ” …we were matched up well against them, but we lost strokes when it came down to our third and fourth scores.”
Despite dropping to 2-4 in the league, and 2-5 overall, Gearhart showed his optimism for the rest of the year by saying that he “was impressed with how far Elliott Lauder has come along this season, he jumped into our sixth man spot and he has improved every match this year. I am hoping that very soon he will break that 100 stroke barrier soon.”
Clearfield will hit the road for league play again on Thursday September 16 when they travel to Central.
On Monday the Lady Bison golfers will compete for the first time when they travel to Centre Hills Country Club to compete against State College, Bellefonte, Penns Valley, and Philipsburg. It will be the first time in a bout 50 years that Clearfield has had a girl’s team compete.
