Hoffner, Kot, Nixon, Hess, and Fedder Pick Up Victories at Hummingbird Speedway

August 14 — The forecast and weather radar looked ominous Saturday night as it appeared sometime throughout the course of the evening storms would overtake the track. But the rain held off and the entire show was completed with five repeat winners visiting Victory Lane to receive trophies from the Hollopeter Family in memory of Fred Holllopeter. Feature winners were Luke Hoffner of Turbotville in the Limited Late Models, Joe Kot of DuBois in the Street Stocks, Adam Nixon of Grampian in the Four Cylinders, Ryan Hess of Frenchville in the Pure Stocks, and Shawn Fedder of Clearfield in the Front-Wheel Drive 4-Cylinders.

The evening’s first feature was the Four Cylinder class, with Devin Lewis and Mike Anderson on the front row. Anderson led the first lap and began to stretch out his lead until a caution on lap five for a spin by Don Henry. Anderson was setting a fast pace and at the halfway point he continued to lead, followed by Alan Barnett, Lewis, Adam Nixon, and Paul Metz Jr. The night ended for Metz as his motor expired with several laps to go. This put Nixon on Anderson’s back bumper, and he got alongside after the restart. The two ran side-by-side and Nixon was able to get by with one lap to go and pick up his fifth win of the season. Anderson was second, Barnett third, Lewis fourth, and Henry fifth. Nixon and Henry won the heats.

In a slight change to the running order, the Limited Late Models took to the track for the second feature of the evening. Jake Shady started on the pole with Luke Hoffner alongside him. Hoffner powered to the early lead using the outside line. A caution for debris on lap two slowed the pace. But Hoffner continued to lead on the restart, with Bob McMillen challenging Shady for second. Another caution for a spin by John Reed on lap five kept the field close, but Hoffner still led, with McMillen on his tail while Shady and Chris Farrell battled for third. As the crossed flags were displayed indicating halfway, it was Hoffner, Shady, Farrell, Cody Schultz, and John Chesnalavich. Shady kept things close, but Schultz’s night came to an end as something broke on the car and he hit the frontstretch wall on lap seventeen. Another caution for debris on the restart was a good break for the leaders as contact was made between the top three and they spun, blocking the entire track and almost the entire field came to a stop. Shady was unable to continue. Eric Moore moved into second and pressured Hoffner for the lead. The two ran side-by-side for a number of laps, but it appeared Moore’s tires may have gone away in the last few laps as Hoffner again gained an advantage and went on to his fourth win of the year. Moore took second, with Farrell, Dwayne Brooks, and John Chesnalavich rounding out the top five. Heats were won by Hoffner and Schultz.

Next up was the always competitive Street Stock class. And this feature would prove no different, as close side-by-side racing is the norm. Craig Bainey and Bob Ralston Jr. brought the field to the line, and Bainey led early with Gary Little moving into second place. Following a caution for a spin by Jim Bloom on lap two, Little and Bainey both slid high and Brian Rhed was able to move into the lead. Several other cautions for minor incidents slowed the pace, but Rhed still led, as Little and Jamie Price put pressure on. As half of the laps were complete, it was still Rhed showing the way. Joe Kot had worked his way into second, with Little, Bainey, and Bruce Hartzfeld giving chase. Rhed and Kot gave the fans a show as the two battled side-by-side for the lead and swapped the position several times. With two laps to go, Rhed began to fade and Kot hung on for his second straight win, and fifth of the season. Following him across the line were Little, Hartzfeld, Rhed, and Price. Heat winners were Rhed, Ralston, and Bainey.

Matt Heindl and Justin Kanouff made up the front row for the Pure Stock feature. Heindl led lap one, but Dave Kohler spun and collected Steve Scaife and Terry Borden. Following a brief delay to untangle the cars, Ryan Hess worked his way into the lead following the restart. He pulled away from the rest of the field as five cars battled for position behind him. On lap six, it appeared as an oil line broke on the car of Shawn Munoz; he spun and a fire erupted in the engine compartment. It was extinguished and racing resumed, with Hess still up front, followed by Heindl, Steve Arthurs, Dustin Challingsworth, and Kyle Shannon. Hess stretched out his lead again, and took win number two of the year. Challingsworth was second, then Heindl, Roswell Babcock, and Arthurs. Heat wins went to Shannon and Hess.

The Front-Wheel Drive 4-Cylinders then took to the track to close out the evening’s program. Eric Luzier and Bryan Warren were on the front row, and Luzier took the lead for lap one. But Jacob Kline worked his way by to lead lap two, and a caution came out on lap three slowing the field. Shawn Fedder moved from his fifth starting spot to the number one position on lap five, and at the halfway point it was Fedder, Aaron Luzier, Kenny White, Kline, and Warren. Intense racing continued behind Fedder as he pulled away late and won his third feature of the season. Second through fifth were Aaron Luzier, Kline, White, and Warren. White and Ben Smith took heat wins.

78 cars were in the pits, with 18 Limited Late Models, 21 Street Stocks, 9 Four Cylinders, 15 Pure Stocks, and 15 Front-Wheel Drive 4-Cylinders. Racing action continues next Saturday with trophies being presented In Memory of Eric McGarvey. The following week will be Season Championship night with points ending in all classes and double-points on the line. Many point races are very tight and teams are vying for top spots. Plans continue to be made for several specials at the track, including the Mick Orsich Memorial Late Model Open on September 18th, and the Chili 100 on October 9th. The Orsich Memorial will also include fund-raising for the Hahne Cancer Center in DuBois. Orsich was the former track manager / flagman who passed away following the 2004 season after a bout with cancer. For more information, check the track’s website at www.hummingbirdspeedway.com.
