According to the state police in Clearfield, Robert Thompkins, 45 of Penfield, was traveling east on I-80 in the left lane. Police said that for unknown reasons he started to travel along the north berm. He got the Dodge Durango he was driving back onto the road for a short time before again going off of the road. He went off of the north berm and struck the embankment. The Durango overturned and came to rest on the I-80 median on its roof.
Passenger Jesse Thompkins was pronounced dead at the scene. Robert Thompkins suffered moderate injuries and was flown to Altoona for treatment. Passengers Joanne Mincey and Mary Thompkins both suffered minor injuries and were taken to Clearfield Hospital.
Police were assisted at the scene by the Lawrence Township Fire Department, Clearfield Emergency Medical Services and PennDOT.
