In Clearfield Borough … Traffic Light Could be a Costly Fix

(Aaron T. Evans)

CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Borough could possibly spend $18,000 to fix the traffic light at Bridge Street.

The storm that hit Friday evening took out the traffic light at Bridge and Second Street for what Leslie Stott, borough operations manager, believes to be the sixth time.
The control panel box was worked on Saturday and cost the borough $800 and could not be fixed. Stott said there will be a large gathering tomorrow morning with representatives from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to try to figure out what can be done to remedy the situation.

One possible solution to the problem is to move the control panel cabinet. Steve Biancuzzo said that the panel’s proximity to the bridge and the water could be what is causing the lightning strikes. A move to the panel is not included in the $8,000 to $18,000 range that it could cost to fix the light. Stott said she is not sure the panel can be moved but is hoping PennDOT will be able to answer that.

Stott said, “I have called everyone I can imagine to call. This has to be fixed immediately. It is a safety hazard.”

One way the borough can cut their costs is to purchase used parts from State College or DuBois. Stott said that they have taken parts from the light on Bigler Avenue at the Bionol entrance.

Members of council and the police department have taken to directing traffic during peak traffic times.

Council member Jim Kling asked if the borough had the money and where it would be coming from to which Stott told him it would come from the liquid funds. “I will forewarn you that this will be one less street we pave next year,” Stott said.

Council voted unanimously on the motion to spend the money on fixing the light.
