CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield American Legion baseball team, which qualified as the host team, will join five league champions and two runners-up in the Pennsylvania Region 7 Tournament that gets under way Saturday with four games at two sites.
Manager Sid Lansberry’s John Lewis Shade Post 6 Chiefs finished third in the Jefferson County League’s regular season and playoffs and will take a 17-13 record into the double-elimination tourney that runs through Wednesday.
After Punxsutawney forced an extra game for the JCL Playoff title with a 10-4 win Wednesday, regular season kingpin DuBois rebounded to eke out a 14-13 victory with a run in the bottom of the ninth Thursday evening and claim the final spot in the regional.
Opening round action at the Lawrence Township Recreation Park Field will pit DuBois (19-3) against Cambria County League champ Claysburg (20-2) at 10 a.m., Central Penn League champ State College (30-7) against District 31 (Westmoreland County) champ Bushy Run at 1 p.m. and Clearfield against Cambria County League runner-up Somerset (17-4) at 4 p.m.
Indiana County League champ Homer City (15-8) and District 31 runner-up Greensburg will meet at the Bison Sports Complex.
Sunday’s game times will be the same for pairs of elimination bracket and winner’s bracket games.
If Clearfield wins, the Chiefs will get the Homer City-Greensburg winner in the 4 o’clock nightcap on the LTRP Field.
If they lose, they will draw the loser of the State College-Bushy Run game at 10 o’clock opener at the Bison Sports Complex.
The LTRP concession stand will be in operation with hot food and cold beverages throughout the tourney.
