Obituary Notice: Cora L. Shaffer

Cora L. Shaffer, 88, of Curwensville, passed away on June 24, 2010 at UPMC Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA.

Born June 18, 1922 in Grampian, PA, she was the daughter of Robert Lincoln and Elizabeth Ann (Phillips) Mathews.

In 1955, Mrs. Shaffer took a staff position in the cafeteria of the newly built Curwensville Area Joint High School and over a 28 year period, she grew through the ranks, assuming the position of Cafeteria Manager, over seeing all the duties and responsibilities of operating and meal planning for the then 4 cafeterias in the Curwensville Area School System  Prior to that she had worked for the former DuPont Airplane/Marine in Hyde, PA

She was a member of the Curwensville Presbyterian Church, was a charter member of the Curwensville Business and Professional Women’s Club, was a charter member and had held numerous offices in the Rescue Hose and Ladder Co. Auxiliary of Curwensville, and was a member of the Pennsylvania State Association Retired Employees.

After her retirement in 1982 until her death she had many interests including painting, crocheting, gardening, and for a period, taught ceramic classes

She was wed to Droz “Peck” Shaffer on Dec. 24, 1946 and who preceded her in death in 1978.   She was also preceded in death by her parents, brothers John, Harry, Robert, and Thomas Mathews, sisters Edith Blankenhorn, Mae Reilly, Dorothy Wolf, and Elizabeth Allison, as well as a number of nieces, nephews.  Mrs. Shaffer was the last member of her generation.

Surviving are 2 children Darlene Shaffer Duttry and her husband Dennis of Cranbury, NJ and Donald W. Shaffer and his wife Carolyn of Grampian.  Also surviving are 4 grandchildren; Melissa (Duttry) Pirrera and her husband Chris, Tim Duttry and his partner Chuck Mahan, Tracie (Shaffer) McGarry and her husband Steve, and Michael Shaffer and his partner Jordan Knab and 4 great grandchildren Alec McGarry, Daniel McGarry, Nathan Pirrera and Sophie Pirrera.

She is also survived by a large family of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life service for Mrs. Shaffer will be held at the Curwensville Presbyterian Church on June 28 at 11:00 a.m., with the Reverend C. Richard Berggren officiating.  Interment will be in the Crown Crest Memorial Park, Hyde, PA.

Friends will be received at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home, Inc. of Curwensville on June 27 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
