Another Hot Night for Mid-Season Championships at “The Bird”

Submitted by Hummingbird Speedway

Reynoldsville (June 26)-Hummingbird Speedway once again beat Mother Nature and held Mid-Season Championship night this past Saturday. Picking up victories and earning double points were Dwayne Brooks (Limited Late Models), Gary Little (Street Stocks), Adam Nixon (Four Cylinders), Kyle Shannon (Pure Stocks), and Aaron Luzier (Front-Wheel Drive Four Cylinders).

After preliminary qualifying events and a brief intermission for work on the track surface, the Four Cylinders began the evening’s feature program. Nixon and Mike Anderson led the field to the green flag, with Nixon gaining the early advantage. Aaron Henry worked his way to third and the top three began to pull away from the rest of the field. Nixon then stretched out his lead while Anderson and Henry battled for second. At the halfway mark it was Nixon, Anderson, Henry, Mark Hummel, and Alan Barnett. On lap nine Henry and Anderson spun in turn two. Nixon continued to lead and captured his third win of the season. Barnett, Hummel, Anderson, and Henry rounded out the top five. Nixon and Anderson won the heats.

Next up were the Street Stocks, with Dan Dimmick (subbing for Jamie Price) and Chad Rougeux on the front row. Rouguex led the first lap, but a spin by Ray Reynolds brought out the caution. Gary Little took the lead on the restart, and hung on through several more minor cautions that slowed the pace in the early going. Meanwhile, Bob Rosman had worked his way from a fifth starting spot into the second position. The cautions continued as Joe Kot began moving toward the front. Halfway through the race Little led, followed by Kot, Rosman, Jim Bloom, and Brandon Connor. With five laps to go, Kot challenged Little for the lead, and the two ran side-by-side for three laps. Little maintained the top spot, and as he and Kot continued to battle, the two made contact coming out of turn four and brought out another caution. Kot was sent to the rear while Little retained the lead and hung on to win. He was followed by Bloom, Connor, Rosman, and Kot. Heat race victories went to Rosman and Dan Smeal.

Dwayne Brooks and Chris Clark brought the field of Limited Late Models to the line, and Brooks led lap one. Rich Womeldorf slowed on the frontstretch, bringing out a caution on lap two. Brooks pulled away on the restart, as Clark was still second and Luke Hoffner & Cody Schultz battled for third. Hoffner and Schultz caught Clark and all three raced hard for the second spot. At the halfway point it was still Brooks leading, followed by Schultz, Hoffner, Clark, and Donnie Connor. By lap seventeen it looked like Brooks would be able to cruise the rest of the way for victory, but a caution bunched the field back up again. Brooks was strong on that restart and several more for minor incidents as he captured his first win of the year at the track. Second through fifth were Hoffner, John Chesnalavich Jr., Bob McMillen, and Schultz. Heat races were won by Bill Davis and Schultz.

A field of eighteen Pure Stocks was led by Justin Kanouff and Ryan Hess to begin their feature event. Kanouff led lap one, but was challenged by Mike Calhoun for the lead. Kanouff hung on for three laps, but all eyes were on Kyle Shannon, who had made a charge to the front from his seventh starting position. He was up to second by lap three and passed Kanouff for the lead the following lap. As flagman Bob Sullinger showed the field the crossed flags indicating the halfway mark, the running order was Shannon, Calhoun, Hess, Kanouff, and B.J. Hudson. Shannon pulled away from the field for win number two of the year at Hummingbird. Ryan Hess took second, followed by Hudson, Steven Arthurs, and Kanouff. Hudson, Shannon, and Matt Heindl copped the heats.

The final feature event of the evening was the Front-Wheel Drive Four Cylinders, with Stephanie Lucas and Lee Zalno on the front row. Lap one was led by Lucas, but a caution for debris on lap two and another for a spin by Dustin Kemp on lap three slowed the pace. Shawn Fedder went by Lucas on the outside to take the lead on lap four. Halfway though and it was Fedder, Aaron Luzier, Lucas, Jacob Kline, and Bryan Warren. Another caution on lap seven set up a restart with Fedder and Luzier side-by-side. Fedder held off Luzier for several laps, but Luzier continued to pressure him and finally got by with two laps to go and captured his second straight win. Fedder, Lucas, Warren, and Kline followed. Heat races were won by Luzier, Warren, and Kie Brown.

Action continues next week as the track celebrates Independence Day with a regular five division racing program on Saturday July 3rd. The following week will be “Kids’ Banner Night” as children can display banners they make of their favorite drivers. Fan voting will determine winners and prizes will be awarded.
