Sixty years ago Joe Paterno began working at Penn State as an assistant football coach. This photo (at right), taken in the summer of 1950, is the earliest-known image of Paterno at Penn State. His first football game occurred Sept. 30, 1950, against Georgetown University, and Penn State won 34-14 in front of a crowd of more than 16,000.
Paul Dzyak, sports archivist, recently found this photo in a collection of historic University photographs in the Penn State University Archives.
For years, Sue and Joe Paterno have been pillars of Penn State and the community through their personal philanthropy and tireless volunteerism.
