Kot Repeats; Hoffner, Barnett, Shannon and Fedder Pick Up First Wins of the Season at Hummingbird Speedway

Submitted by Hummingbird Speedway

Reynoldsville (June 12) – The temperature was hot, the weather was ominous, and the action was intense as Hummingbird Speedway saw four first time winners this season. Joe Kot of DuBois was the lone repeat winner as he captured his second Street Stock feature win in a row. Luke Hoffner of Turbotville took home the checkers in the Limited Late Model class as other winners were Alan Barnett of Philipsburg (Four Cylinders), Kyle Shannon of Brockway (Pure Stocks), and Shawn Fedder of Clearfield (Front-Wheel Drive 4-Cylinders).

It was “Racing Pioneers’ Night” and former drivers from the 1960s – 70s were on hand. Bud Garvey and friends brought a number of old racecars to the track as well. The old-time cars were on display and one of them, former driver Jimmy Walker, carried the American flag during the National Anthem with his vintage racer, along with his grandson Jeremy Buck in his current Pure Stock. The old-time cars also took to the track to run some laps after the heat races were run. Then it was time for the features to begin.

Mark Hummel and Barnett brought the field of Four Cylinders trackside for the first feature race of the evening. Hummel led the first lap, but Barnett worked his way around the outside to lead lap two. Hummel then ran side-by-side with Mike Anderson for a number of laps as they battled for the second spot. Adam Nixon was working his way toward the front when he and Hummel made contact on the backstretch; both cars retired to the pits. At the halfway mark it was Barnett, Andersonul Metz Jr., George Bailey, and Tim Bailey. Barnett began to stretch out his lead as Anderson, Metz, and G Bailey battled for second.  Anderson gained the second spot and began to challenge Barnett for the lead, but Barnett held on for his first win of the season. Metz and Anderson captured the heat race wins.

Next up were the Street Stocks, with Craig Lobb (subbing for Dan Smeal) and Brandon Connor on the front row. Lobb led lap one, with Craig Bainey and Connor running side-by-side for second. Bainey’s race was short-lived as his engine blew on lap three. Connor was leading on the restart, with Gary Little and Joe Kot applying pressure. On lap eight, Bob McMillen (subbing for Jamie Price) spun and was collected by Bruce Hartzfeld and Jim Bloom. Kot led on the restart, followed by Connor, Little, Bob Rosman, and Chad Rougeux. Kot held the lead through several more minor cautions, and Little got by Connor for second. He tried hard to get by Kot for the last three laps, but Kot held on for his second straight win. Heat race wins went to McMillen, Little, and Bainey.

The field of seventeen Limited Late Models took to the track next, led by Bob McMillen and Denny Fenton. McMillen led early, and started to pull away slightly, but Luke Hoffner reeled him back in and began to apply pressure. Halfway it was still McMillen, followed by Hoffner, Ed Connor (subbing for Denny Draisma), Dwayne Brooks, and Eric Moore. McMillen and Hoffner traded the lead several times on laps fourteen through sixteen, and following several more cautions, Hoffner began to pull away by lap twenty. Connor moved up to second and tried to catch Hofner but ran out of laps as Hoffner took his first win of the season at Hummingbird. Moore, McMillen, and Brooks rounded out the top five. McMillen, Denny Fenton, and Hoffner copped the heats.

Jeremy Buck and Ryan Hess made up the front row of the Pure Stock field at the drop of starter Bob Sullinger’s green flag. Before a lap was complete, there was a four-car pileup in turn two. On the complete restart, Hess took the lead, with Buck applying pressure. The top three began to pull away from the rest of the field, and at the halfway point it was Hess, Buck, Kyle Shannon, Justin Kanouff, and Matt Heindl. Shannon worked his way into second place and got by Hess on lap eleven just as the caution flew for a spin in lap two. He hung onto the lead on the restart, and began to pull away late and picked up his first win of the season at the track. He was followed by Buck, Mike Calhoun, Steven Arthurs, and Heindl. Heat race wins went to Calhoun and Shannon.

The final feature event of the evening was the Front-Wheel Drive Four Cylinders, with Bill Weber and Lee Zalno making up the front row. A spin on the initial start by Rich Lucas cause another complete restart, and Zalno took the lead. He held the lead through several more cautions and the ensuing restarts, as Jacob Kline, Weber, and Shawn Fedder tried to close the gap. On lap three, Dan White clipped on of the infield tires coming out of turn four and rolled his car several times. White was unhurt. The restart saw a four car battle for the lead, and the top spot was finally gained by Weber. He led lap five, but Fedder took it away from him on the next lap. Halfway through the event Fedder led, with Weber, Kline, and Zalno giving chase. Fedder continued to lead as Kline and Weber battled side-by-side for the second spot. Fedder took the win, followed by Kline, Weber, Zalno, and Aaron Luzier. Heat race victores went to A Luzer, M Luzier, and Kline.

82 cars were in the pits despite very threatening weather and events at several surrounding communities. They treated the fans to some exciting action, and the program was completed shortly before 11PM. Next week will see another five-division program at the 3/8 mile facility located between Falls Creek and Reynoldsville. Race teams and fans are reminded that road construction will force the closing of Route 830 just outside of Falls Creek. Those travelling to the track will need to use an alternate route if they are coming from that direction.
