Special Olympics Under Way at Penn State University

UNIVERSITY PARK – More than 2,000 Special Olympians and 750 coaches from across the commonwealth celebrated the start of the 41st annual Summer Games at Penn State on the University Park campus June 10. The games will run through June 12.

Thursday began with preliminary competitions, including events in softball, basketball and equestrian showmanship and gaming, and ended with the summer games’ opening ceremonies at Lubrano Park, adjacent to Beaver Stadium. The games, which are the largest event of the year for Special Olympics Pennsylvania, feature three days of intense competition in bowling, golf, tennis, gymnastics and more.

The games will conclude Saturday afternoon with closing ceremonies on the lawn at East Halls, home to the Olympic Village at Penn State.
