CLEARFIELD – On Wednesday, board members of the Clearfield County Recreation and Tourism Authority learned more about a unique tourism spot in downtown DuBois.

Steve Hindman, a new artist with the Winkler Gallery of Fine Art, told the board they had an intricate part in their outreach.

“It’s tough to keep going. You make us visible. We appreciate all that you’ve done for us,” he said. He noted most gallery sales come from local tourism.

Operating under a co-operative format, he said they have 16 artists. From his understanding, he said they are the only co-operative gallery in the immediate area.

Hindman said artists must complete a strict jury process before becoming a part of the gallery. He said they are each a working artist with years of experience.

“It makes us unique, I think,” he said. He said the artists share the duties of “manning” the gallery. By doing so, he said they’re able to offer incite into the background and methods used for the artwork.

In December 2003, the Winkler Gallery of Fine Art opened its doors to the public.  Hindman said they strive to maintain an atmosphere that allows artists to display high quality work for the public to view and purchase.

According to Hindman, visitors will observe various styles of artwork at the gallery. He said they offer a wide range from photography and digital-generated pieces to original paintings in water color, acrylics and mosaics. He said they also display sculpture and both stained and blown glass.

In addition, he said education was a priority for them at the gallery. He said they offer artist workshops in mediums, such as silk painting and water color. He said those who attend are presented with the opportunity to fine tune their art skills.

Board Chairwoman Nancy Micks said she was fortunate for her office to be located near the gallery. She said she strongly encourages local groups and individuals to take advantage of its offerings.

She said she recently attended a wedding reception at the gallery. She said she also knew of other area groups and clubs that have held meetings there.

“It’s a great opportunity to see all that is there. (The artwork) is amazing. It’s unbelievable,” she said.

The Winkler Gallery of Fine Art is located at 36 N. Brady Street in DuBois. The gallery is open to the public from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
